Sony`s Playstation 4 is AMD powered and why this is good for AMD

The Playstation 4 has finally been revealed, great news for gamers everywhere but this is even bigger news for AMD. AMD took a beating in 2012, hardware expectations were not met, market share disappeared in PC and server space.

But things may be about to turn around for them, current management seems to have a new plan that does not require AMD to compete directly with Intel, case in point? All the next generation gaming consoles will be AMD powered, that`s no so potatoes to say the least. Have a look at the Sony Playstation 4 specs:

Main Processor:  Single-chip custom processor
CPU :                      x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”,  8 cores

GPU :                      1.84 TFLOPS,  AMD next-generation Radeon™ based graphics engine

The Jaguar core is AMD`s evolution of it`s low power Bobcat architecture, fabricated using 28 nm process, now granted you won`t find with processor in AMD`s commercial inventory but this points to future low powered offerings such as the upcoming Kabini line, could 8 core Kabini APU`s be around the corner?

glad AMD seems to be on track, will be interesting to see the upcoming console specs for the next Xbox and Nintendo game machines.

the future looks bright for AMD
